Abstract

Background: Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is characterized by a range of eye and vision-related symptoms and has been a recognised health problem for over 20 years. It is estimated that globally, about 45 to 70 million people spend hours staring into a video display terminal (VDT). Uncorrected or undercorrected refractive error (RE) can be major contributing factors to computer related eye stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the RE characteristic in student with CVS at faculty of medicine Udayana University.

Method: This study is a descriptive observational study with cross sectional approach. This study was conducted at faculty of medicine Udayana University on March 15th 2018. Data was collected through questionnaires and basic ophthalmology examination.

Result: Student with CVS who participated in this study were 47 students and 35 of themwith RE. Characteristic of the subject consist of 9 boys and 38 girls. Mostly of them were 20 years old, Balinese, miopia astigmat compositum, and history of previous glasses. The most disturbing symptoms is eye strain with total 38 person (80.9%), mostly of them use computer ≥ 5 years, with duration per day were less then 4 hours, break between working about >10 minutes, and distance from eye to screen >50cm.

Conclusion: The proportion of ocular and extraocular symptom were found mostly in student with RE, however there was no statistically significant association between them (p>0.05).
